Oh, bookish friends!

You know when you stumble upon an author that many people don’t know about, then you read their books and wonder, “WHY THE HELL DON’T MORE PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THIS!?”

Yeah, get ready. I’m about to gush a bit because today’s release celebration is the third book I’ve read from this author and it seriously just keeps getting better and better!

Everything you think you know about what this story is going to be about at first glance is probably wrong. This story is so much more and is like nothing I’ve read that is remotely like any of its sister tropes.

Here’s the Goodreads synopsis:

Chloe: Moses has been my best friend since kindergarten. We met when I shoved him face first in the dirt and took his action figures. Ever since, we’ve been tighter than blood, but we’re not blood, and my body knows that. My heart has known that for years.

The fact that being a pole dancer has interfered with my relationship status is an understatement. Moses is literally the longest I’ve been with a man, except I’m not really ‘with’ him.

Now I’m approaching a place where I’m curious enough to tell him about my feelings. I’ve gotten close, but a man as hot as my bestie has had really small gaps between girlfriends. I know it could be a big mistake, and he’s never seen me that way, but I won’t know for sure unless I act, right? Only problem is, I might be too late again.

Moses: I’m not blind to the fact that my best friend is dangerously hot. She’s basically every man’s dream but she’s not mine. I’m the one that protects her, councils her, and encourages her, knowing she will do the same for me. She’s my girl.

But now something is different, and I can’t put a name to it. Something feels changed, but I’m putting all that on the back burner because I think I found my perfect girlfriend.

Still, Chloe is in my head; I’m not sure she would handle knowing that. After all, I’m in the friend zone…

My Review:

Once again, another book by Nicole Strycharz sucks me in and never wants to let me go.

This is book two in the Relationship Quo Series but can be read as a standalone. In the first book, ‘The Divorce’, though that story was about Chris and Jenzy, we meet Moses and he pursues Jenzy until they finally enter a relationship. Now, in ‘The Friend Zone’, we meet his best friend, Chloe during the same timeline as when Moses meets Jenzy…see where this is going?

This story gripped my heart and had me in knots almost the entire time. What I love about Nicole’s writing is that she knows how to tell a full, emotionally rich story. Just like with ‘The Divorce’, other writers may take both story concepts and leave you frustrated and perhaps with a lack of closure (it’s happened to me with other writers and stories like these), and most times, by the end, I’m upset with one or both main characters, feeling like the writer didn’t convince me that one deserves the other. (Again, I’ve read books that have left me this way many times). But, nope, not Nicole! Every time I feared she would leave me without proper closure or that it’ll feel rushed and not truly resolved, chapters later and the conclusion of this story for both our main characters wraps up so perfectly.

This scene made my heart bleed…not what you think is happening. *all the tears*

Book one and two are such uniquely told stories. I have yet to read any similar tropes pull off such quality storytelling. So much happens and by the end, you feel like you’ve lived a full life with these characters.

Her characters feel so real to you. Chloe is a professional dancer; a pole dancer, folks–ex stripper! And all the stereotypes that come with that are thrown at her. You think you know her at first glance but she’s so much more. I loved Chloe’s strength and independence but she was also vulnerable, loyal, hopeful, even though life hasn’t always been good to her.

Then we have Moses and we see so much more of who he really is and his point of view of things during his time with Jenzy, from ‘The Divorce’. If you’ve read ‘The Divorce’, Nicole structured the timeline and story so perfectly. You get just enough from the previous book but so much more is new and fresh.

THE DIVORCE (Relationship Quo Series #1)

I don’t want to give spoilers! This was one hell of an emotional journey! I cried, I laughed my butt off, especially whenever her friend, Brianna was around (who is blind, spunky, and wonderful. I loved her character!) Another amazingly engaging and full of heart, sexy, and sweet story that will suck you in! Head over to Amazon and ONE-CLICK it! It’s only $0.99! It’s seriously SO. GOOD!

Nicole has been writing historical romance for over ten years. Her passion for history fuels the creativity for her novels and she finds the tools there to create a compelling plot.

However, she’s evolved into writing contemporary romance as well, with more modern stories to come.

“The Divorce” and “Meadow Creek” are both nominated in the 2016 Indie Book Awards! “The Divorce” also won second place in the 2016 Best Cover Design in ‘Urban Literature Magazine.’

Nicole lives in Virginia with her three children and their amazing Grandparents. She is always reading or working on the next book between mommyhood adventures.

I can not even begin to express my love for this book! From the moment I first saw the cover, I was already hooked and drawn into needing this story in my hands. ASAP. It’s probably my favorite cover from the WILLOW BAY STABLES SERIES.

Well, let me tell you, the content behind that cover most definitely did not disappoint either. What a beautiful, sweet, and gripping story of true love at it’s finest. Where love looks past the darkness one finds and embraces, hiding away from the world. Where that same love refuses to give up and bursts into the darkness with brilliant, blinding light.

Aurora Daniels is the bleeding heart of her family. With a gift and a passion for helping to heal others, she has a legacy of kindness and gratitude—a modern-day saint.
Every Sunday since she turned eighteen, Aurora has driven three hours into the city of Edmonton, Alberta, where she volunteers at an equine facility that rehabilitates troubled youth by working with horses. With their increasing success rate, the facility is expanding to foster violent parolees in hopes of a more effective release into society.
Assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder—that’s what it says under the name on his sheet. Rhys White is released on good behaviour and promises to remain under contract for community service at the Equine for Hearts facility for a court-ordered period of twelve months.
Willow Bay’s saint may have stumbled across the one sinner who can’t be saved from himself.
Will Aurora be able to rein in Rhys’s quest for revenge before it’s too late? Or will she spend the rest of her life loving a man behind bars?

My goodness, this book. This book and its characters. This book was poetry in the dark.

From the very beginning, you are gripped and tossed into a scene of such sadness. You’re left with a glimpse of a moment that haunts a man whose heart will take hold of you in ways that make your soul ache.

My goodness, Rhys White broke my heart. He made me want to just hold him in silence and never let go.

Rein In gives us the story of our third Daniels sibling in the Willow Bay Stables series. Each story in this series is beautiful in its own way. With this new installment, there was something so deep and tangible about the emotions between our two main characters. Aurora and Rhys take you on an emotional journey that constantly tugs at the deepest parts of your heart while leaving a soft, lingering smile almost after every interaction they have.

“A blonde girl in a sundress, with lips softer than a waterlily and the name of a princess, scared the ever-loving piss out of me.”

This story is the embodiment of romance. Get ready to be immersed both in the thick of darkness and the brilliance of the sun. Your heart will feel tight and bleed for this broken man, this broken soul. Then, your heart will sigh at the beauty the healing power of a genuine and innocent love can have.

“Someone with a light as bright as yours shouldn’t spend her days in the dark.”

Lifting my head, I let my hands find their way to either side of his hard jaw.

“Then let me show you the sun.” I sat up and my lips found his.

He met mine with a near decade of sorrow, and I took it.

I absolutely loved this story. I loved how in just a few chapters, Anne Jolin takes you through a full and complete journey full of poetry and depth. A story of love and redemption. I was most certainly #RuinedByRhys ❤ Perfect fall read! Cozy up with a soft blanket, a warm cup of goodness and let your heart ache, sigh, and smile through Aurora and Rhys’ story.

My interview as a GIRL BOSS over at ThatMoxieChickStudio

Hey, friends!

Past few weeks have been a whirlwind, as you know and I’ve been playing catch up! One thing I missed sharing with y’all was a really cool opportunity I had a couple week’s back. Vanessa from That Moxie Chick Studio approached me about being interviewed for their feature, Social Sunday. So far, their guest hosts have been fellow GIRL BOSSES, like Vanessa. The interview touches on starting and running a small business.

This is the first time I’ve done anything like this and having to sit down and contemplate this last year as a small business owner was a real treat. I realized I hadn’t really taken a moment to take it all in. You compare yourself to others and their level of success and don’t even notice that you’re negating your own.

This was a random dream of mine, years ago. In just one year, we have a running, growing small business. That’s something to celebrate. We have almost eight thousand instagram followers which is crazy to me. And again, sure, in light of others whose numbers are FAR greater than ours, that still doesn’t cancel out where we are at. We’re still in the ‘everything goes back into the business’ phase, but we’re still here. We’re still growing. We’re connecting to many in the reading/writing communities which is a huge element I desired for the company. Not to just provide a product for this audience but to create a community as well.

I’m so grateful to my business partner and everything she provides to the business. I’m beyond grateful to all who have supported us.

Anyway, let me stop with the rambling mush. Feel free to hop on over to their site and read my interview!

“Fate. Hate. Love. Lies.  Which four letter word will change their lives forever?”

Pre-order Four Letter Word by J. Daniels NOW:

Hey friends!

I’m here today with a new bookish nugget that I’m happy to share with y’all! I have been a huge J. Daniels fan for a few years now. I stumbled one day on her SWEET ADDICTION series by accident one night a few years back and was hooked. Luckily, after I delved in and fell in love with Reese Carroll, I wasn’t left deprived of more man goodness. She had the Bama Boys waiting for me in her other series, ALABAMA SUMMER SERIES. Oh, boy, was I glad I stumbled upon her books.

From there on, J. Daniels became an instant one-click author for me. Suffice to say, when I saw her promoting a new series, I became amped for it’s arrival so I can get my hands on it and escape into reading wonderland.

‘FOUR LETTER WORD’ already seems like it’s gonna be a wild, whirlwind of a read and I. CAN. NOT. WAIT! Definitely recommend a looksies! You can pre-order this baby now!

WRITING BLOG: Why I Psych Myself Out Before Writing

modefied A Writers Life
Some of you have been following my little blog here for some time and in turn, know about my writing journey. It’s been a long journey of trial and error. It’s been season after season of learning what works for me, discovering my writing style and preferences, and finding the right story as my hopefully soon to be debut novel. *gulps*

In recent months, I shared about my current work in progress. My main character–let’s call her ‘G’–and I have gotten to know each other and she wanted her crazy story told sooner than I had anticipated. Upon building her story up throughout the outlining phase and then beginning the drafting process, I realized that her story was who I wanted to present to the world first. I immediately got sucked into her world, friends, and adorable surprise pet.

In the last three months, I had determined to fervently work on G’s story and gave myself a deadline of sorts. I am choosing to aim for an early 2017 release. Self-publishing, of course.

Unfortunately, when that decision was made, that is when life decided to be a punk and dump loads and loads of unexpected manure over my personal and my family’s life. Between those fun events, add to that, still running and growing a small business, working a part-time ‘day’ job, and well, my poor G and her friends took a back seat which made my soul weepy.

With those lulls between writing sessions, something else was happening that was infuriating me. Every time I had determined a day of writing, I’d set all my things in front of me, I’d get cozy and create the perfect atmosphere and then….well, then I’d just sit there. Sit and wait. Wait to put my fingers on the damn keyboard and start typing.

On my business YouTube channel, Coffee Reading Writing, we focus a lot on videos about writing. A few videos back, I spoke on two subjects; Procrastination and Writer’s Being Perfectionists.

Both of those things are killers to writers. They are the ultimate cock-blockers.

Today, is one of those days. Luckily, I attempted for the first time this whole Hemingway prescribed, ‘WRITE DRUNK. EDIT SOBER’ method and let me tell you…it works! Well, perhaps, you want to aim for Buzzed Writing. I can’t imagine being flat out Drunk and attempting to even turn on my computer, less write actual, relevant words.

Yesterday, my final word count at 3am was 4,090. More than I thought I’d write so, yay me!

Today, I’m attempting to get another chunk done. Only, as the day has gone by, I’ve been PROCRASTINATING. Like a MoFo! Sure, it probably didn’t help that after my drinking the night before I woke up, clutching the covers, refusing to get out of bed.

Suddenly, I had an epiphany.

Yes, procrastination is a nasty little parasite. Sure, the desire to string the perfect combination of words keeps me paralyzed over the keyboard (ie. Writer’s shouldn’t be perfectionists). But, there was something else nudging at my productivity and I couldn’t put my finger on it.

Then. BAM!

I was watching a YouTube video and it’s a long one. It’s a GamePlay of Hitman. I’m a nerd. I love watching people play cool games. Anyway, I’m watching and not wanting to stop yet. My friend texts me just at that time with this little motivation, good vibes message for me in regards to writing.

writers blessing

I laughed about how I’m having trouble with the whole, “May the internet not distract you,” part. Then she encouraged me further and said, take internet breaks.

Well, duh, Desiree…Right?

Eureka. Moment.

I am such a freaking extremist in every aspect of my life. I’ve learned this about myself more and more in recent years. Desiree, you can write some, then stop, watch the video as a reward, then go back to writing, then have another break.

In fact, I actually mentioned this in the procrastination video; ideas to overcome it and how to use small tasks, every ten minutes followed by a short break reward. So, why is it so hard for me to just follow that tip myself?!!

Cause Desiree doesn’t know how not to throw herself into something 100%. Sure, that’s not always a bad trait to have, but sometimes, that sucker can shoot you in the foot. When I write, I tend to open that document and when I finally begin putting words to a page, I will go at it for HOURS. I’ll go till the wee hours of the night–because I’m definitely nocturnal. I don’t know how to break up my work periods. When I give myself to a project, I go all in with blinders.

Unfortunately, that is why I psych myself out before writing. Subconsciously, it’s like I’m telling my brain,

“Once we start working, no more fun or playtime. Get ready for HOURS of brain crunching.”

Now, don’t get me wrong. I LOVE WRITING! I love my story, my characters, the events to come. Writing is fun for me. I just need to pull back on the crazy a bit and allow myself to delegate timeframes during my writing for breaks. I’ll start a writing sprint and go hard for hours. But getting to the actual starting point of writing will sometimes take me ALL DAY because I’m in my head.

Anyone else having this, “Light.Bulb” moment about themselves?

So right now, I will go and post this. Then I am going to get back into my document. I will finish the scene I left off on last night. After that, I’ll give myself a 5 min. reward break and watch more of the Hitman Gameplay. (I know. I’m random.)

Well, I just had to get that off my chest. I hope my ramble felt relatable to any of you writers out there. Actually, it can be relevant stuff for just about anyone doing any sort of project out there. The more you know, right? Once you do, you’re aware of it and can take actions to improve the circumstance.

Alright, enough rambling. Off to write! Till next time, friends!

COVER REVEAL: The First Full-length Novel by Alexa Riley!

  New AP Cover Reveal.jpg

Coming December 27th, 2016

Amazon US

Let’s talk about Alexa Riley’s books for a minute, shall we? I discovered randomly ‘her’ (recently found out it’s actually two awesome women under the pen name) books a couple years ago and on occasion escaped into their short story world full of cheesy, insta-lovey, alpha sexy, sweet, hot stories. It’s a delicious guilty pleasure! Where there’s an Alexa Riley story, there’s a disclaimer, warning readers what they’re about the get into and confirming that yes, the style of writing and story is on purpose. And we love it! By now, if you’re a fan, you know what you’re jumping into. And she always has fun with these quirky disclaimers and dedications.

Warning: This is hot and fast insta-love that ignites the pages. It’s burning heat that combusts into an inferno of lava. Okay, that’s all the fire words I could come up with. Now insert a pun about a big hose. It’s quick, dirty, and ridiculously over the top. (Disclaimer for, HOLDING HIS FOREVER)

One thing I admire about Alexa Riley’s writing is that she knows how to give you a full, well-written story even within such a short word count. Many authors who write short stories sometimes leave you at the end feeling like so many moments were missing. It didn’t feel like a complete beginning, middle, and end experience. Somehow, Alexa Riley has mastered this and does it time and time again.

Now, hearing that she’s coming out with a full-length novel, I am beyond excited to see all the goodness we’re going to get in this one story. Here’s the synopsis and cover reveal for this upcoming novel, EVERYTHING FOR HER!

AP new - synopsis.jpg

USA TODAY bestselling author Alexa Riley’s first full-length novel shows just what happens when a strong, possessive man finds the woman of his dreams.

I’ll never forget the way she looked, so confident and sure of herself. I watched her from a distance. She wasn’t ready for me yet. I didn’t approach her and I didn’t disturb her, but I never once took my eyes off her.

Mallory Sullivan is ready to start her new life. After graduating at the top of her class, she’s landed one of the most coveted internships in the United States. Hard work and determination have gotten her to this moment of living the life she only dreamed of while growing up in foster care.

From the start, I knew that she would be my greatest achievement, so the day I let her go, I set down a path for her. A path to me.

She never expected Oz to be the greatest culmination of those dreams. But sometimes fate determines who you fall in love with. Who makes you lose control. Who owns your soul.

And then you realize it wasn’t fate at all…

I’ve wanted to care for and protect her since the first moment I saw her. I’ve constructed everything in our lives so that at the perfect moment, I could have her, could give her the life she deserves.

EverythingForHer_Web.jpgAP new -about the author.jpg

Alexa Riley is two sassy friends who got together and wrote some dirty books. They are both married moms of two who love football, donuts, and obsessed book heroes.

They specialize in insta-love, over-the-top, sweet, and cheesy love stories that don’t take all year to read. If you want something SAFE, short, and always with a happily ever after, then Alexa Riley is for you!

From the moment you begin reading, Anne Jolin ropes deep emotions around your heart as you hold your breath through an intense prologue that sets the path for our main heroine, Rayne, aka. Ray.

A single mom to an adorable, spunky girl (Riley), Ray comes home to be the new veterinarian and has sworn off cowboys. Enter sexy and persistent cowboy, Owen Daniels. Rodeo bronco rider is coming back home to check on his leading lady in his life, Remington’s Lady, his injured horse who he left in the care of Ray Brookes, trusted family vet. It just turns out, he wasn’t expecting a woman; a beautiful woman who looked nothing like the old man Ray he remembers. This was Rayne “Ray” Brookes, the daughter.

These two begin a game of cat and mouse. Owen is denied a date but he’s not used to being told no. He likes a challenge. But, ladies, this isn’t some brooding alpha who aggressively tries to get what he wants; nope, this man is all cowboy gentleman and oh, my word, did he make me swoon. He pursued the woman he wanted to get to know. He instantly took a liking to her daughter and their growing friendship was one of the most precious things ever.

I fell in love with these three together.

Then….then, Ray finally had her walls pulled down and she became owned by Owen and it was wonderful!

“Every kiss we shared before was rivaled by this kiss, because with this kiss, he owned me. I was owned by Owen.”

This story has so much heart. You’ll start with a lump in your throat, you’ll laugh at the wonderful antics at the Willow Bay Stables family dinner table, you’ll swoon, you’ll get teary eyed and you’ll find yourself smiling with a happy sign in the end. Another Anne Jolin book that I loved. Her characters suck me in and stay in my heart. I loved reading Ray, Owen, and Riley’s story and I can’t wait for Rhys and Aurora’s next which we get a sneak peek of at the end of this book.

I highly recommend this! Snuggle up with cozy socks, a warm drink in hand and get lost in the Canadian countryside for a bit. Get Owned by Owen! ❤

Owen Daniels lives his life eight seconds at a time. The thrill of anticipation that comes with sitting on twelve hundred pounds of untamed power is unparalleled. The adrenaline rush that floods his system when the chute opens is one of life’s most unique and natural highs.

Ride eight seconds bareback on a bucking bronco—that’s his life.

When Owen’s stock horse, Remington’s Lady, is injured midway through the rodeo circuit, he trailers her back home to Willow Bay, Alberta, to remain in the care of the local vet, Ray Brookes.

Months later, with a truck bed full of buckles, Owen comes home to collect his Lady from the man he trusted to help her recover. Only Ray happens to be short for Rayne, and Rayne happens to be a woman.

And this woman wants nothing to do with a cowboy fresh off the circuit. As far as she’s concerned, he can take his buckles, boots, and spurs right back on out of her life.

Will Rayne keep them from holding on to their eight-second ride? Or will love buck out of the chute in time for a perfect score?
