Oh, bookish friends!

You know when you stumble upon an author that many people don’t know about, then you read their books and wonder, “WHY THE HELL DON’T MORE PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THIS!?”

Yeah, get ready. I’m about to gush a bit because today’s release celebration is the third book I’ve read from this author and it seriously just keeps getting better and better!

Everything you think you know about what this story is going to be about at first glance is probably wrong. This story is so much more and is like nothing I’ve read that is remotely like any of its sister tropes.

Here’s the Goodreads synopsis:

Chloe: Moses has been my best friend since kindergarten. We met when I shoved him face first in the dirt and took his action figures. Ever since, we’ve been tighter than blood, but we’re not blood, and my body knows that. My heart has known that for years.

The fact that being a pole dancer has interfered with my relationship status is an understatement. Moses is literally the longest I’ve been with a man, except I’m not really ‘with’ him.

Now I’m approaching a place where I’m curious enough to tell him about my feelings. I’ve gotten close, but a man as hot as my bestie has had really small gaps between girlfriends. I know it could be a big mistake, and he’s never seen me that way, but I won’t know for sure unless I act, right? Only problem is, I might be too late again.

Moses: I’m not blind to the fact that my best friend is dangerously hot. She’s basically every man’s dream but she’s not mine. I’m the one that protects her, councils her, and encourages her, knowing she will do the same for me. She’s my girl.

But now something is different, and I can’t put a name to it. Something feels changed, but I’m putting all that on the back burner because I think I found my perfect girlfriend.

Still, Chloe is in my head; I’m not sure she would handle knowing that. After all, I’m in the friend zone…

My Review:

Once again, another book by Nicole Strycharz sucks me in and never wants to let me go.

This is book two in the Relationship Quo Series but can be read as a standalone. In the first book, ‘The Divorce’, though that story was about Chris and Jenzy, we meet Moses and he pursues Jenzy until they finally enter a relationship. Now, in ‘The Friend Zone’, we meet his best friend, Chloe during the same timeline as when Moses meets Jenzy…see where this is going?

This story gripped my heart and had me in knots almost the entire time. What I love about Nicole’s writing is that she knows how to tell a full, emotionally rich story. Just like with ‘The Divorce’, other writers may take both story concepts and leave you frustrated and perhaps with a lack of closure (it’s happened to me with other writers and stories like these), and most times, by the end, I’m upset with one or both main characters, feeling like the writer didn’t convince me that one deserves the other. (Again, I’ve read books that have left me this way many times). But, nope, not Nicole! Every time I feared she would leave me without proper closure or that it’ll feel rushed and not truly resolved, chapters later and the conclusion of this story for both our main characters wraps up so perfectly.

This scene made my heart bleed…not what you think is happening. *all the tears*

Book one and two are such uniquely told stories. I have yet to read any similar tropes pull off such quality storytelling. So much happens and by the end, you feel like you’ve lived a full life with these characters.

Her characters feel so real to you. Chloe is a professional dancer; a pole dancer, folks–ex stripper! And all the stereotypes that come with that are thrown at her. You think you know her at first glance but she’s so much more. I loved Chloe’s strength and independence but she was also vulnerable, loyal, hopeful, even though life hasn’t always been good to her.

Then we have Moses and we see so much more of who he really is and his point of view of things during his time with Jenzy, from ‘The Divorce’. If you’ve read ‘The Divorce’, Nicole structured the timeline and story so perfectly. You get just enough from the previous book but so much more is new and fresh.

THE DIVORCE (Relationship Quo Series #1)

I don’t want to give spoilers! This was one hell of an emotional journey! I cried, I laughed my butt off, especially whenever her friend, Brianna was around (who is blind, spunky, and wonderful. I loved her character!) Another amazingly engaging and full of heart, sexy, and sweet story that will suck you in! Head over to Amazon and ONE-CLICK it! It’s only $0.99! It’s seriously SO. GOOD!

Nicole has been writing historical romance for over ten years. Her passion for history fuels the creativity for her novels and she finds the tools there to create a compelling plot.

However, she’s evolved into writing contemporary romance as well, with more modern stories to come.

BOOK TALK: Cover Love for Corinne Michaels’ ‘SAY YOU’LL STAY’

Hello, friends!

Past few weeks have been crazy. If it’s not one thing it’s always another. I’m here to talk about this swoon-worthy book by one of my fav authors of 2015.

I’ve read and been sucked into all the goodies Corinne Michaels has given us so, to say I’m not excited about this would be crazy. How awesome that, not only do we get a cover reveal but the wonderful news that in just a few short weeks, we’ll have this baby in our hands to read and devour.

And here it is:

One word.

It was all he had to do. Instead, he got on that bus and took my heart with him.

That was seventeen years ago.

I moved on. Marriage. Kids. White picket fence. Everything I ever wanted, but my husband betrayed me and I was left once again.

Alone, penniless, and with two boys, I had no choice but to return to Tennessee. He wasn’t supposed to be there. I should’ve been safe. However, fate has a way of stepping in.

This time around, the tables are turned. It’s my decision. Second chances do exist, but I don’t know if we can repair what’s already been broken . . .

** This is a STANDALONE **

Hello handsome cover. She insisted that it would be better than Liam’s covers from the ‘CONSOLATION DUET’ and we all scoffed that it was impossible. EVERYONE had swooned over Liam’s cover and that model portraying Liam. Let’s reminisce.

But, I gotta say…I am very much liking this new cover for her new book that is set to release June 20th. I also just love the warm, cozy Fall feel I’m getting from, ‘SAY YOU’LL STAY’.

This is a standalone which is great because she’s been known to torture us with CRAZY cliffhangers. No book two to wait for with this one! *jumps for joy*

Not gonna lie, that synopsis scares me. Those types of second chance stories are hard, especially if the guy did something royally asinine, leaving the girl heartbroken for years to come. I’m a bit stubborn by nature so I take these offenses to heart when reading. The character who screwed up has to redeem the crap out of themselves. But, Miss Corinne hasn’t failed me yet!

I can’t wait to get my hands on this! I’ll definitely come back and let y’all know my thoughts when I do!

Happy Reading!

When Writing, Does Your Reading Suffer?

Tee hee…I saw that and couldn’t resist.

Good afternoon, beautiful people! Happy Wednesday! Hope you’re all having a productive week and that each day ends with laughter and cuddles.

As some of you know, I’m back at it with the writing. Like Daniel and the white vans. Sorry, lame joke. I’ve got coffee running through my veins and I’m feeling good so, apologies on any hyper-delirious ramblings.

Writers? Here’s a question for you.

When writing, does your reading life suffer?

modefied A Writers Life

Reading, just as much as writing, is my happy place. My Home & Solace. I have writer friends who can not read at all now that they’re writing full time. Other writers, I’ve heard, don’t read while they’re drafting as a way to preserve the integrity of their own story. They don’t want to accidentally get inspired by someone else’s work and subconsciously incorporate those ideas into their story. Then, you have others who just give themselves days off to catch up on some leisure reading before returning to the writing grind.

When I go through my writing lulls, it’s really hard not to give into reading time that then turn into DAYS of just devouring books and leaving my poor characters I’m writing behind.

I’m the type of person who just can’t give up reading while I’m in the writing cave. I need it. It’s my mind’s anxiety medication. It helps me shut down from the world and find my happy place. I struggle between being an extremist. I’ve mentioned this before. I’m all white or black. Definitely not something that works to my benefit.

Now that I’m back to writing, I’m missing out on the already ever-growing TBR pile of books I have and want to get. Each new, promoted release taunts me. It calls to me to cuddle in bed, turn down the lights, fluff my pillows and spend the next 5-8 hours reading in one sitting. Sleep’s for the weak. *grins brightly*

reading is my escape watercolor modefied

But, alas, I love my books too. I want to see them come to life. I want to share them with you all one day in the–preferably–near future. Being back in the writing cave schedule, I figure I can give myself the occasional day off so I can dive into a book once a week or bi-weekly. To some, that seems like a lot but I used to read one book practically every night. My nocturnal brain is totally okay with staying up till 3 or 4 in the morning. Now, instead of reading those nights, I’m back to writing and getting my ‘1000 Words For G’ word count done.

Last night was a good night. I had a busy CRW day with Melody and then spent the evening writing.

That’s my Wednesday update, folks! I’m off to my “day” job soon but wanted to chat with you all on the booknerd woes of this writer. Let me know in the comments below what kind of Writer/Reader are you?

RELEASE DAY BLITZ: ‘Chasing Spring’ by R.S. Grey

Title: Chasing Spring
Author: R.S. Grey
Release Date: Feb 1, 2016
Find on Goodreads
I thought I’d left Blackwater, Texas behind for good. I didn’t belong in the small town, but my dad wouldn’t listen. He dragged me back home in his beat-up truck and dropped a bomb along the way: Chase Matthews was moving in with us. He was the golden boy of my high school, my former best friend, and the last person I wanted sleeping across the hall. His presence was too great a reminder of the ghosts I was trying to forget.
I didn’t ask for a hero. I don’t want to be saved.
To me, Lilah Calloway meant late nights sneakin’ out, moonlit hair, and sparklers in July. She was my best friend until the day she left and I’d assumed Blackwater had seen the last of her. Then, like a tempest, she rolled back into town for the final half of senior year. The chopped hair and dark devil-may-care attitude warned most people away, but I knew if I fought hard enough, I could find the lost girl.
I didn’t want to be her hero. Some girls don’t need to be saved.
I am a lover of books, chocolate, reality TV, black labs, and cold weather. Seriously, if I had it my way, I would be curled up on the couch with all of those things… everyday.
I live in Texas where I spend my free time writing and reading. My favorite authors include Mindy Kaling & Jonathan Safran Foer. I’m a comedy geek and love all things “funny”. Women like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Mindy Kaling are definitely the biggest inspirations for my writing, though I think my work tends to skew a bit smuttier than theirs.

SNEAK PEEK: ‘Defenseless’ by Corinne Michaels

defenseless excerpt reveal

Hello fellow booknerds!

I’m excited to share this sneak peek with you all today. As I’ve mentioned previously, Corinne Michaels has become one of my favorite authors. I hadn’t realized I had read her work back in 2014 when I read ‘The Belonging Duet”. Then, 2015, I was gifted “Consolation”, which holy crapola, FEELS! Luckily, the second book in this duet (“Conviction”)was available immediately because, HOLY CLIFFHANGER, BATMAN! She’s one of the few authors I forgive cliffhangers for. Only because it was just BRILLIANT.

For you who have read the “Consolation Duet“, then you know the ‘man of the cloth’, “Bless you my child”, goofy, inappropriate but you love him anyway, Mark Dixon. I have NO idea why I hadn’t realized or remembered til I started reading it that this was Mark’s story. I was almost happy I forgot because of the elation I felt when I did realize.

Here’s everything you need to know about Corinne Michaels’ newest book set to release, January 19th.

defenseless teaser 2

I look around because the hair on the back of my neck prickles. “We need to get out of here.” Someone is here, watching, listening, and now it’s time to do what I do best. “I’ve missed you.” I smile while I use the tip of my finger to trace his jawline.

Mark’s eyes shift over my head as he pulls me flush against his body. We’re both facing exits. “I’ve missed you more,” he plays along.

This might just work. He’s on alert as well and senses something awry. His fingers splay across my lower back as he holds me close. “Maybe we should head back to my place so you can show me just how much.” I glance over his shoulder. His blonde hair falls in his eyes as he dips his head into my neck. I know the move, but a shiver runs down my spine.

“You’d like that, wouldn’t you?” I release a very low moan, which I didn’t give permission to escape. Mark’s lips glide across my skin.

I’m not sure he’s acting.

I’m not even sure that I am.

Then Mark reminds me this is serious. “There are two guys behind you.” His voice is low enough that only I can hear him. To anyone passing, we’re two lovers reacquainting ourselves. “One at my two o’clock, and the other is out of my view.”

“One just passed behind you twice. I think going toward my exit is best.” I snuggle closer. “I’m ready when you are.” The double meaning is meant for anyone to hear, but Mark should know it means I’m ready to disappear. “You’ll have to keep up, though.”

He leans back while cupping my face. His lips hover over mine. “I don’t have any problems keeping you satisfied, princess.”

My pulse spikes. I know he can hear it, feel it, see in my eyes that I’m affected. My breaths are shallow as his hands slowly make their way down my arms.

“Arrogant prick,” I mutter.

I can tell he’d be an incredible lover. His overconfidence would only play to my benefit. We’re both cut from the same cloth, ready to fight for dominance. He’d win, though. I can see it in his eyes. There would be no battle, Mark has already won. Right now, he controls me. He determines whether we kiss, what it’ll be like, and for the first time in my life—I surrender.

His lips come closer. “They’re closing in,” he whispers, his eyes locked on me. “Charlie?” he asks.

“What?” My voice is barely audible.

“This will happen again when we don’t have to fight off people, and then you’ll be mine.”

I don’t have time to reply. His lips crash down on mine as he spins me around so he leads our exit. The second our mouths collide, my brain disconnects. My fingers tangle in his hair, grabbing it to pull him close. Mark’s hands hold my face to his and he continues to guide me. I know we’re moving but I have no idea to where. In this instant, I don’t care. Never has someone made me feel so desperate for them. I never lose control, never feel so lost, yet right now, I am. I’m raw, exposed, and completely vulnerable.

My life is a secret.

His life is dangerous.

‘Sweet Soul’ (Sweet Home Series #4) by Tillie Cole + GIVEAWAY!

Oh, man, this book. This. Book. This. Author. I have plenty to gush on both matters but before we get into that, let’s discuss my recent hiatus. Things have been beyond crazy for me lately and I plan to write a separate blog this week about it but in short; I’ve been moving houses. I have grown a strong hate for moving. I’ve done it plenty of times in the past but, I don’t know what it is about this time particularly, but it has SUCKED ASS. It’s been a nightmare. In part, it could be due to the crazy Jekyll and Hyde ex-landlord we used to be neighbors with giving us VERY short notice that they needed our old house vacant, asap. Anyway, all in the all, everything worked out and we are currently living in a new house. There are still boxes everywhere. It has been such an overwhelming experience but anyway, as I said, I’ll rant more about this later. LET’S GET INTO THIS BOOK!

Sweet Soul Cover

Title: Sweet Soul
Series: Sweet Home #4
Author: Tillie Cole
Age group: New adult
Genre: Contemporary romance
Release date: 15th December 2015

One shy lost soul.

One silent lonely heart.

One love to save them both.

Life has never been easy for twenty-year-old Levi Carillo. The youngest of the Carillo boys, Levi is nothing like his older brothers. He isn’t dark in looks or intimidating to everyone he meets. In fact, he’s quite the opposite. Haunted by a crippling shyness and the tragic events of his past, Levi spends his days with his head buried in his books, or training hard for his college football team. Too timid to talk to girls, Levi stays as far away as possible and completely on his own… until he saves the life of a troubled pretty blonde, a troubled pretty blonde that might just be the exception to his rule.

Elsie Hall is homeless. Or at least that’s all anyone ever sees. Everyday is a fight for survival on the cold streets of Seattle, everyday a struggle to find food and keep warm. Alone in life—a life that’s dangerous and cruel—her will to keep going is an ever-losing battle. In her world of silence, Elsie has given up hope that her life will contain anything but constant struggle and pain… until the beautiful boy she has severely wronged comes to her rescue at precisely the right time.

*New Adult novel—contains sexual situations and mature topics. Suited for ages 18 and up.

Moving my hand, I ran my fingers over the brown beads. “Why do you hold these, Mamma? You always have them with you. Right now, you’re clutching them real tight.”

Mamma sighed and brought the rosary to her chest. “I use them to pray to Mother Mary. She gives me strength, mia luna. I pray to her for strength.” Mamma’s voice cracked again and I tried to think hard. I tried to think why she needed strength.

Blinking, a thought came to me and I asked, “Is it Austin and Axel? Do you pray for them? Because of the Heighters?”

Mamma sighed and ran her finger down my cheek. “Always, mia luna. I always pray for them. For what they do each night for that gang.”

I shook my head, knowing there was something else. “But what—”

Shh,” Mamma whispered. She then held up the rosary and placed it in my hand. She curled her hand around mine and pressed the beads into my palm. “Levi, you take these now. I want you to have these. I want you to keep them for strength. For the strength you will need someday soon.”

I frowned and shook my head. “No, Mamma. They’re yours. I’m strong with you around. I don’t need these.”

Mamma’s head dropped, and she took a deep breath.

Mamma?” I questioned. She was acting real strange.

Mamma wiped her cheeks and a sad smile spread on her lips. “Va bene, mia luna. I’ll keep them for now. Grazie. Always thinking of your mamma. But one day, when… when I’m not here, you keep these with you. I want you to remember that these are yours. You are not your brothers, Levi. You are kind and shy, not hard and boisterous, ready to fight the world. You are my quiet baby boy. My sweet, sweet soul.”

I’m not weak,” I pushed, hating that I wasn’t like my brothers. Axel and Austin were strong and tough. I wanted to be just like them.

Mamma pressed a kiss to my forehead. “Never, Levi. You are a Carillo boy after all. But you are different from Austin and Axel. They are alike in so many ways—hot headed and tough, hard on the outside until they let you in. You are the timid one, the gentle brother—inside and out. You are the one to carry his heart on his sleeve. You are the one who watches silently from afar and loves with all his soul. ” Mamma huffed, and said, “Whoever you end up with, my son, whoever claims your heart, will be a very special girl indeed.” Her finger stroked my cheek. “So much love, mia luna. You will love with your whole being, and it will be forever. You could not love in any other way.”

Quick Thoughts:

First, let me say this. When it comes to many series standalones I’ve read, I have found they don’t necessarily need to be read in order. With the Carillo Boys, I would HIGHLY recommend reading at least from Book Two, “Sweet Fall” which gives us our first Carillo brother’s story. Then, Book Three “Sweet Hope” is our second Carillo brother and finally, “Sweet Soul”, our third and sweetest Carillo.

This author has quickly become one of my absolute favorites. She can write deep, dark, and gritty, or  sweet, soulful and sexy. I binge read everything she’s published this year. None, and I mean, NONE have been a ‘meh’ read or a disappointment. Diving into “Sweet Hope”, I had some hesitation when I found out who’s story it was. No way did I think she could make me invested in the main character who I strongly disliked after the HORRIBLE things they did. Well, it turned out to be my favorite of the series. Then, she brought us the youngest Carillo in this newest release and my heart tightened and exploded. This woman KNOWS how to write tortured men to perfection. She is an artist who creates masterpieces out of broken men like I have yet to read. This story is simply BEAUTIFUL. Don’t miss out on any of these!

Mirror, mirror … who’s the fairest of them all?

I still cringe when I hear that line. A fairy tale that had girls pretending they were the fairest, the most beautiful, and the most entitled. A fairy tale most couldn’t grow out of turned my haunted childhood memories into a living nightmare. Girls who grew up believing that pile of garbage became the meanest of all ‘mean girls.’

And those mean girls were right – it was a line meant for all the beautiful people in the world – and I knew the answer would never be me.

The women with long legs, flat stomachs, and perfect chests.

The type of women Kane Masters gravitated toward.

Well, that’s definitely not Willow Tate.

No. That will never be me.

Because I’m completely imperfect.

And … I hate myself.

I have no idea what Kane could possibly see in someone like me when he could have them.

perfectly imperfect teaser 2

“Are you nervous right now?”

I nod.

“Tell me why.”  His demand, steady and calm, gives me the courage I need to tell him.  To open a vein and bleed my insecurities.

“I’m not perfect,” I whisper.

“And neither am I, Willow.  I don’t want perfect.  What so many see as perfect, to me, is fake.  Perfect isn’t achievable naturally.  No one, and I mean no one, is perfect.”

I’m shaking my head before he’s even done speaking, but one long finger comes up and presses against my lips before I can speak.

“No, let me finish.  There isn’t beauty in perfection.  It’s as fake as the image the word projects.  Beauty is found in imperfection, Willow, because to admit you’re not perfect means you’re admitting you’re not whole and absolute.  When I think of myself, I see someone willing to admit he’s as far from complete as it gets because, in order to get to that perfection, I need to find the other part of me who will make my life better.  To take all the faults I have and fill them, and only then will I be there.  You see, the way I see it, the only way to become perfect is to find that perfectly imperfect person who brings it out of you.”

When he stops, I swear I might have stopped breathing.  How am I supposed to respond to that?

“Do you trust me?” he asks, his voice strong and sure.

“Yes, Kane.  Nerves or not, I do.”

“Then let me show you what I see when I look at you.”

He brings his hands up, framing my face once again in a way I’m quickly becoming addicted to the feeling of.  His warm eyes implore, begging me without words to let him continue.  I do not intend to stop him, regardless of the butterflies currently taking over my system.  I’m all in.

This Booknerd’s Thoughts:

This sweet and sexy read was more than I expected! I’ve read a couple stories where they give us a heroine that doesn’t fit the usual mold (physically) and they were done well. Perfectly Imperfect is most definitely one of them. Harper Sloan’s Willow was raw and real and gave us a glimpse inside the mind of a woman whose image does not fit society’s perception of beauty. With that, we see the honest thoughts and insecurities that plague a woman’s mind and how they can most definitely hold her back from living her life; preferring to hide than exhaust herself, trying daily to meet these standards.

Willow’s home life and family live and breathe the entertainment and beauty industry’s need for supermodel “perfection”. A tragedy that hit Willow’s life at a young age threw her into a downward spiral of hate, guilt, loneliness, and eating disorders. Growing up, she never found herself fitting into the standard of “perfection” her family and family business expected of her.

Then comes Kane, a well-known actor who definitely gets around and has been seen with countless modelesque woman who would be considered the “perfect” body type.

What I loved about Kane is that his desire and interest in Willow was not what some may fear is a “fetish”. He felt a connection from the moment he first laid eyes on her and felt it again, years later when he saw her again. When he felt what he always hoped to find within another, he was a man on a mission, pursuing relentlessly for the beauty found in being perfectly imperfect. This story pulls at your heart string in many areas. It gives us a glimpse of the beauty and hope a woman can find within herself when she finally chooses to take the reins and steer her life where she always wanted it to go. She fights her demons, yanks their choking hands off her and learns to love herself. The perk was finding a man who helped her see what was already there.

It’s sweet and sexy and empowering. It’s a must read! Don’t miss this one!
